A Generic Drug is a carbon copy of a brand-name drug in its dosage, strength, safety, quality and performance, in its proposed use, administration and performance. They have the same active ingredients and are, therefore, as effective as their brand-name counterparts, having the same risks and benefits, purity and stability.
These Generic Drugs are as strong and take the same amount of time to work on the body as the branded drugs. They are less expensive as they do not involve having to obtain a patent protection which involves a lot of research, development, marketing and promotion besides the investment expenses in all these areas. As the patent nears expiry, manufacturers can apply for generic drug versions and since the above costs are not incurred by these firms, their medicines are cheaper. Also, as these get approved there is great competition in the market which helps to make them more affordable.
Even the facilities of the Generic Drug manufacturers are the same as the brand-name manufacturers and the FDA conducts about 3,500 inspections on these to ensure the same quality is maintained. It is interesting to note that the brand-name firms are associated with 50% of the Generic Drug production either to make copies of their own drugs or other brand-name drugs without the brand names.
Although the efficacy of these Generic Drugs is the same, they cannot have the same packaging and may even differ in colour, flavour and other inactive ingredients as trademark laws do not allow them to be a carbon copy of the branded drugs. Brand-name drugs are usually given a 20 year Patent protection after which competitive generic versions of the drug may be allowed by other drug companies provided these are thoroughly tested by the manufacturer and approved by the FDA.
